Urko González de Zárate: from Donosti Cup MVP to key player at Espanyol
Midfielder Urko González de Zárate, who shone in the 2016 Donosti Cup with Deportivo Alavés, has established himself as a vital player for RCD Espanyol.
In the summer of 2016, a 15-year-old Urko dazzled at the Donosti Cup, leading Deportivo Alavés to victory. The final, held at the Anoeta Stadium, showcased his emerging talent: he scored the decisive goal in a 3-1 win over Lerines, was named MVP of the tournament, and lifted the champion's trophy as team leader. That same pitch, which witnessed his rise, would later become his home with Real Sociedad.
Now 24, Urko is experiencing one of the best moments of his career at RCD Espanyol, where he arrived on loan from Real Sociedad during the last winter transfer window. Since his arrival, he has earned the trust of coach Manolo González, becoming a key figure in the midfield due to his tactical discipline, defensive solidity, and distribution skills. His impact has been so positive that the Catalan club is already considering extending his stay beyond this season.
