The Donosti Cup reaches 50 women’s teams in just one month
The tournament is on track to surpass the record level of participation achieved last summer.
The next edition of the Donosti Cup continues to break records. In just over a month since registration opened, 50 women’s teams have already signed up — a figure that represents a quarter of last summer’s total, when a historic record of 200 female teams was reached.
These numbers suggest that the 2026 edition could even surpass last year’s figures, consolidating the Donosti Cup as one of the leading tournaments in international women’s football.
Last summer, teams from Spain, Portugal, Andorra, France, the United States, Australia, Mexico, Sweden, and South Africa took part. For the upcoming edition, clubs from Spain, the United States, Ireland, Portugal, France, and Mexico have already confirmed their participation. With nine months still to go, the outlook couldn’t be more promising.
As for the categories, the G18 has become, interestingly, the largest so far. This year it changed from U19 to U18 — a decision that seems to have been a great success. The G16 and G14 categories follow in popularity, traditionally the ones with the highest participation. Regarding the origin of the teams, 40% are international and 60% national, a balance that reflects the diversity and global reach of the tournament.
In 2026, the Donosti Cup will celebrate its 32nd anniversary of women’s football, reaffirming its pioneering role in the development and promotion of the sport. Over these three decades, hundreds of players who are now part of the elite have taken part in the tournament — among them none other than world champions Jenni Hermoso, Irene Paredes, Cata Coll, and Vicky López.
Let’s keep growing and helping women’s football grow!
