Donosti Cup joins a European project to transform food waste into biofertilisers
Donosti Cup and Ausolan incorporate dining hall food waste into the European LANDFEED circular economy initiative
Donosti Cup is taking another step forward in its commitment to sustainability by joining a pioneering European project that will transform part of the food waste generated during the tournament into biofertilisers.
The Donosti Cup dining hall, managed by Ausolan, serves around 6,000 people at each meal service. Part of the organic waste generated during the tournament will be given a second life through the European LANDFEED project, a circular economy innovation initiative coordinated by NEIKER, with AZTI participating alongside 21 partners from six European countries. After collection, the waste will be transported to Fertinagros' plant in Teruel, where it will be converted into biofertilisers through advanced fermentation processes.
This pilot project is part of the European Horizon Europe programme and aims to demonstrate the feasibility of converting waste from the HORECA sector into bio-based fertilisers, thereby reducing environmental impact and dependence on chemical fertilisers.
