This summer, the Donosti Cup will feature a top-level figure from international football. Yoshi Ono, fitness coach and athletic trainer with over a decade of experience at the U.S. Soccer Federation, will be present at the tournament as part of the Wisconsin IS squad, an organization that has participated in the Donosti competition for 18 years.

Ono reached one of the most important milestones of his professional career in 2022, when he was part of the medical staff of the United States Men’s National Team at the Qatar World Cup. Following the U.S. team’s absence from the 2018 World Cup, his participation in Qatar represented the culmination of a long professional dream. The United States advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Iran, eventually falling to the Netherlands, in what Ono described as a successful and inspiring campaign for the future of U.S. soccer.

Yoshi Ono developed a deep passion for football from a very young age. After completing his postgraduate studies, he has worked with a professional soccer team in Minnesota and U.S Soccer Federation with the youth and senior teams, always with the goal of reaching the sport’s biggest stage: the World Cup. He currently works as an athletic trainer at Aurora Health Care in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, where he combines his elite-level experience with the development of young athletes and managing their health and well-being.

His presence at the Donosti Cup is part of Wisconsin’s project, an organization dedicated to broadening the horizons of young footballers through sport. Each year, the program brings together competitive players from the state to travel abroad, train and compete with teams from around the world, and promote cultural exchange through football, with the goal of leaving a positive image of the United States in every destination.

Wisconsin has participated in the Donosti Cup 17 times, with both boys’ and girls’ teams, and has one tournament title in its record. Wisconsin International was founded by Walter Howard, a pediatrician from Wisconsin and a passionate admirer of San Sebastián.
