Iceland to be represented at the Donosti Cup once again with five teams

Þróttur Reykjavík will compete with three boys’ teams and two girls’ teams, marking the third participation of an Icelandic club in the tournament’s history

12 de January de 2026

The Donosti Cup will once again feature Icelandic representation this summer. Knattspyrnufélagið Þróttur, a historic club from Reykjavík, will take part in the tournament with a total of five teams: three boys’ teams and two girls’ teams.

This will be the third time in the tournament’s history that a club from Iceland competes at the Donosti Cup. The first was Selfoss, which participated in the 2006 edition, exactly 20 years ago. Later, in 2018, Grótta KR took part, and now Þróttur will take over and once again place Icelandic football on the map of the Donosti Cup.

Founded on August 5, 1949, Þróttur is one of the most traditional sports clubs in the Icelandic capital. Initially established as a football club, it soon expanded into other sports such as handball, athletics, speed skating, volleyball and tennis, disciplines in which it has also achieved significant national success. In football, the club has historically been a regular presence in Iceland’s national leagues, with multiple promotions to the top division and a solid track record in both men’s and women’s football.

The club has also been a pioneer in the development of women’s football in Iceland, being part of the first women’s A-deild in the 1970s, and today boasts one of the largest youth academies in the country. In recent years, Þróttur has also embraced innovative initiatives such as walking football, becoming the first Icelandic club to introduce this discipline.

Þróttur’s participation in the Donosti Cup represents Iceland’s return to the tournament and highlights the growth and international projection of its youth football. Five teams, a long sporting history and a strong commitment to player development will come together in San Sebastián to continue writing a new chapter in the history of the tournament.
