Donosti Cup reaches 75 girls’ teams registered in just over a month
The tournament is already approaching half of the 178 girls’ teams that took part in the last edition and aims to break its all-time participation record.
Donosti Cup 2027 has made a strong start in its commitment to women’s football. Just over a month after registration opened, the tournament has already reached 75 girls’ teams, approaching half of the 178 teams that participated last summer. The registration figures are encouraging, and the tournament is looking ahead to next summer with the goal of surpassing its all-time record of 200 girls’ teams, set in 2025.
The tournament’s international appeal remains one of its main strengths. While the last edition welcomed teams from Spain, Portugal, France, Iceland, the United States and Canada, clubs from Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico, Canada and Australia have already confirmed their participation for 2027. With nine months still to go, girls’ participation is expected to continue growing.
In terms of age groups, G14 and G16 currently account for the highest number of registered teams. As for their origins, 64% of the teams are international, while 36% are from Spain, reflecting the growing interest in Donosti Cup among clubs from around the world.
In 2027, Donosti Cup will celebrate its 35th anniversary and its 33rd edition featuring girls’ teams. Over the decades, hundreds of players who have gone on to reach the highest levels of football have taken part in the tournament. Among them are FIFA Women’s World Cup champions Jenni Hermoso, Irene Paredes, Cata Coll and Vicky López, with the latter two recently recognised at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The countdown to Donosti Cup 2027 is already underway, and the continued growth of women’s football is once again set to be one of the highlights of the upcoming edition.
