The Donosti Cup will take part in the second edition of the Iberdrola Super A awards recently announced. This call pursue to recognize and give visibility the best projects launched in Spain in favor of gender equality and the empowerment of women through sports.
The Donosti Cup has been committed to women's football since 1994 and proof of this is that in the last edition more than 120 girls’ teams from 9 different countries participated.
The tournament currently has 6 girls’ categories from 10 to 25 years old. One of the main novelties this year will be the incorporation of the G25 category so that all those players who have completed their formative stage can continue enjoying the experience of the Donosti Cup.
In these more than 25 years of history, hundreds of girls’ clubs have participated in the Donosti Cup, some of them are: FC Barcelona, Olympique Lyon, PSG, Manchester City, Atl Madrid, Benfica or Madrid CFF among others. During this time, more than 25,000 players have participated in the tournament, some of whom have reached the top of international football. This is the case of Irene Paredes, Jenifer Hermoso, Amanda Sampedro, Nahikari Garcia or Mariasun Quiñones among many others.
Numerous teams from disadvantaged countries have also participated in the tournament, for those teams, playing the Donosti Cup has allowed them to fight for freedom, to show their families that they can be free, to know what is behind the mountains or just to leave the refugee camp. We are talking about the teams from India, Bolivia, Nepal or Palestine that have visited us recently.
We would like to thank Iberdrola for organizing these awards and all the participants for their work in favor of gender equality through sport.
