In an exciting return to the Donosti Cup, the Down's Syndrome team of the Newcastle United Foundation left an indelible mark on the third edition of the tournament. This journey full of emotions and self-improvement became an unforgettable experience for both the players and the tournament.

Newcastle United's commitment to inclusive football dates back to the 2011-2012 season, 12 years ago. They now have 23 teams catering to a range of disabilities, in line with English Football Association regulations.

The team that took part in the tournament was made up of 16 players with Down's Syndrome, who were accompanied by a very proactive group of parents, who supported them throughout their journey. Steven O'Neill, a member of the NU Foundation, commented: "We were lucky enough to attend last year, did really well, and were invited again this year, which was great because we were the only team from Great Britain. It was a great achievement for the kids, to represent the foundation and the city, it's really important to them."

The tournament, which ran from 3-5 July, featured international participation, including Gladiadores from Mexico, Les Pottoks and Olagarroak from France, as well as Real Sociedad and SD Eibar from the Basque Country.

One of the finals pitted Newcastle against the Gladiadores, both teams made up entirely of people with Down's Syndrome. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, and the tension was heightened by the knowledge that the winner would be decided in a penalty shoot-out. Harry, the captain, took the lead in selecting the five players who would take the penalties. Thanks to the courage and determination of these players, they managed to take home the trophy. The celebration afterward was a tribute to the dedication and passion of these players. "I just can't believe I scored. I was like: wow, wow, wow, wow, I can't believe it, wow!" declared NU Foundation player Jordan. "It was a really magical moment, very radical," added Adam.

This victory is a clear example of the work they do in local communities, demonstrating that football is diverse and accessible to all. In August, the club wanted to honor them and the players were able to display the trophy won in the Donosti Authentics’ Cup at St. James' Park in front of a crowd of excited fans.
